LET'S BANG POTS AND PANS

Despite nearly 31 million Americans (NEDA) suffering from eating disorders, there is still a heavy stigma surrounding talking about eating disorders, making it hard for those batting eating disorders to voice their struggle. there is nothing scarier than isolation than when you support. Through the consumed film festival, we are amplifying the voices of those struggling to put a microphone to the silence to, eradicating the taboo that surrounds eating disorders, and giving those struggling a platform to convey their struggles to the public. Scroll down to find out more about the various categories filmmakers and those not experienced with video can submit to to make their stories heard. All films will be live streamed and shown to a live audience in San Diego, California (location TBD). The top films will be shared at the film festival and all approved films will be shared on the Caterpillar House Website.

Highlight the story of someone who has experienced an eating disorder.

Bring to light factors that contribute to the growing number of eating disorders or hurdles that are seldom talked about during recovery.

Express the feeling of an eating disorder and beyond through creative storytelling.

Divisions

DII

DI

Individuals who participate in the DII category have little to no experience in film. They may have made a few projects, but do not have a through understanding of typical editing and filmmaking procedures.

Individuals who participate in the DI category have a through understanding for how to use film equipment and edit, having made big projects in the past.

The top 3 winners will be announced in each category for each division. Certificates will be mailed to the winners.

Rules

i. All films must portray individuals and communities affected by eating disorders with dignity, accuracy, and care. Submissions will be evaluated on the following criteria:

​

  • Avoid graphic or triggering imagery that serves no educational or narrative purpose.

  • Content should not romanticize or glamorize disordered eating behaviors.

​

ii. Individuals featured in documentaries and films must give consent to be featured in the film via the talent release form which will be provided after submitting to Film Freeway or may be viewed (here).

​

iii. No copyrighted materials.

​

iv. Avoid stigmatizing, blaming, or trivializing language.

​

v Films should consider the potential impact on viewers, especially those currently struggling.

​

vi. Trigger warnings are strongly encouraged where appropriate.

​

We are not looking for “perfect” stories, we are looking for thoughtful ones. If your film approaches this topic with care and respect, it belongs here.

The process: Submit a film via FilmFreeway, have all that participated in the film sign the talent release form that will be emailed to the email given on the Film Freeway submission, await results (released Jan. 31), attend the in person-event in San Diego, California or watch it on The Caterpillar Project Youtube Page.

Highlight the story of someone who has experienced an eating disorder.

Whether your story or another's, this category prompts participants to detail an eating disorder survivor's story no matter the severity of their illness. Filmmakers should focus on capturing key points of the disorder such as how it began, the emotions they felt while experiencing it, and recovery. The project will be an important resource for those recovering to feel less alone, uncover the veil of eating disorders for those have little experience with it, and allow survivors to felt seen. Films should also focus on displaying the story in a creative and impactful way.

There are many factors that contribute to eating disorders and parts of recovery that are seldom talked about. This can be in the healthcare setting, societal causes, etc. In the documentary category, participants are tasked with bringing to light and these topics that aren't often talked about.

Express the feeling of an eating disorder and beyond through creative storytelling.

Participants can become creative in how they wish to interpert the emotions that come along with experiencing an eating disorder. You are encouraged to be creative with visuals, types of media used, and sound. filmmakers are tasked with crafting a visual representation that exposes eating disorder, allowing the public to see what they are actually like while providing those struggling with a representation of their pain that allows them to feel heard.
