Why I Started the Project
Hi my name is Portia and I am the founder of the Caterpillar Project! The project was born from the immense frustration I have as a student athlete recovering from an eating disorder. Looking back at how my disorder formed and hearing others stories, I realized how potent diet culture is in our society and how few resources there are to provide student athletes with unbiased information about fueling. Not only this, but there is a lack of knowledge about serious and wide spread ailments in sport such as eating disorders and REDs (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport). Navigating nutrition in a world of billion dollar diet industries is tricky and resources such as dietitians are not always accessible. Through the Caterpillar Project, we are building a platform for student athletes, coaches, and their families to have access to free resources on fueling while also spreading awareness on how prevalent eating disorders and other ailments such as REDs are in athletics. In every presentation and video, I imagine myself speaking to a younger version of myself and hope I can equip the younger generation with the skills to cultivate a healthy relationship with food.
Mission
The Caterpillar Project is committed to empowering young individuals to make informed decisions about their nutrition and well-being. We aim to provide them with the knowledge and skills to cultivate a positive relationship with food and their bodies. Through our evidence-based approach, we strive to counter the impact of diet culture and promote a healthy mindset towards eating.
